Today in class we had a special guest speaker, Mrs. Valencia, from the University of Oregon Museum of Natural and Cultural Science, visit our classroom. She told us about many animals that were found in Oregon in prehistoric times, but that are now extinct. Then we got to look at and touch replicas of a mammoth tooth and skulls from a sabertooth cat, a direwolf, and a camel (yes- there were CAMELS in Oregon once! wow!). Students examined the artifacts to try to determine if the animals were herbivores, omnivores, or carnivores, and then to try and identify the animal it belonged to.
Have your third grader explain what they learned about the animal from each picture!
