We had a very exciting first week in Ancient Rome! As most of you saw, or heard, the room looked a little different for a few days. After all, Roman children didn't have desks! This week the Patricians (wealthy, powerful, land-owning Romans) got to have chairs, cushions, recess equipment, and more. The lowly Plebians (free Romans, usually the working class, poor, non-slaves) had to do with limited supplies and a hard floor for sitting. But that's not fair! Yes, that was the point! And while our desks are now back in place, we still have much to learn about Rome. The next 4 weeks up to Spring Break will be a very busy time!Last week, students chose their topics for the Roman Legacy Project. All of the instructions, rubrics, and timelines were on the original packet. I will also send it out as an attachment just in case. Here are the highlights, including mid-project due dates:
Week of Feb.25th- We will begin our in-class example for the IEW Key Word Outline and draft of a 2 paragraph essay. (This is a week behind schedule, as noted in the updated due dates)
March 4th- KWO for project due. I will look them over and return them that day with feedback for moving forward.
March 11th- Rough draft due. I will have these returned, with feedback by Tuesday. We will complete the final draft in class this week. Final drafts are due on Thursday, March 14th.
Monday, March 18th MODELS ARE DUE
Oral presentations will begin on Monday, March 18th. I will assign presentation spots the week before so you will know what day and time your child is presenting. We present in the library, and families are welcome to come and watch! If you need a specific day in order to come for your child's presentation, please let me know by March 4th. I will do my best to accommodate schedules.
Also coming up in March~ our Roman Legacy Field Trip! We will spend the day touring 3 modern examples of Roman legacies; a waste-treatment facility, a bridge museum, and a newspaper. After the tours we return to school for our very own Gladiator Games and Circus Maximus chariot race! If you would like to volunteer for the day, please contact Mrs. Flores. All gladiator fans are welcome to come watch the games. We will begin about 2:15, out on the playground!
It's time for the CHPCS annual Family Reading Night (Dr. Seuss's birthday party!)
You are invited to join the CHPCS community for a free night of literacy fun! Each classroom teacher will be reading a fabulous book and leading a fun project for child and adult pair to enjoy. Sessions will be filled on a first come, first served basis, so get your slip in soon. This night is NOT just for primary students. Middle school students are encouraged to attend. Please remember that every student needs an adult to work with them. The main objective of the night is to provide a fun literacy night for families to enjoy together. Each session is 30 minutes beginning at 6:30 p.m.. Don’t forget to stay for cake in honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday at the end of session 2 AND to get the Battle of the Book list.
Battle of the Books? What's that?
Battle of the Books, BOB, is a reading incentive program for students in grades 3-8. Students read books and come together as a class to demonstrate their abilities and test their knowledge of the books they have read. This year marks the 4th year for Cascade Heights and we are very excited to see who will win. The official book list will be revealed at Family Reading Night on March 7th, 2013.
Oh, and Third Grade is hosting this month's all-school assembly. Feel free to join us in the gym this coming Thursday (2/28) at 2:30pm.
School Supply round up! It's that time of year when we look around and notice that some supplies are running low. If you can, please send 1 item from the list below in with your child next week. We appreciate it!
- scissors (community supply, no names please. Dollar Tree has 2 pairs for $1)
- glue sticks (NOT O-glue or white glue)
- hand sanitizer
- band-aids
Thank you to all of the parents who have generously donated time this year- on field trips, helping with AR testing, Thursday cleaning, and more. Your time and energy are greatly appreciated!
Have a wonderful weekend!
