Colonial Times in 3rd Grade

Dear Families,
This afternoon we began taking notes for our Colonial Travel Brochures using our Institute for Excellence in Writing KWO (Key Word Outline) format. I handed out a sample page, which we worked on together using the Roanoke Colony as our example. Students then had some time to work with a partner (the student assigned the same colony) to begin their KWOs.
Tonight your student will need to finish finding key words only for the geography and climate sections. For any parents unfamiliar with IEW and KWO, to find key words, your child should read the passage and identify the most important words (3-5 per line). Numbers, abbreviations, and symbols are "free". After writing the key words, he or she should be able to retell, or create a sentence using the key words.
From Roanoke KWO:
1. Atlantic O., N. Carolina, island
2. 12 miles, long, 3 mi., wide
(Retell)
Roanoke Island is in the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of North Carolina. It is 12 miles long and 3 miles wide.

September 17 is recognized in the United States as Constitution Day and Citizenship Day. The purpose of Constitution Day and Citizenship Day is to commemorate the creation and signing of the supreme law of the land and to honor and celebrate the privileges and responsibilities of U.S. citizenship for both native-born and naturalized citizens. This year CHPCS will be celebrating the Constitution all week! From costumed reenactors to school decorations, every grade level will be learning the ins and outs of our founding document. Please join us onThursday for an assembly at 2:30  and see what we've learned!

Also.. next week is Colonial Week! We will be travelling back in time to live like colonists! This means a week without electricity or modern conveniences! (as best we can, anyway!) All week long we will attend colonial school and learn through a variety of hands on activities about life in the 1600-1700s. If you are free in the afternoons (2:00-3:00) and would like to help churn butter, bake bread, dip candles, or play games- please let me know! I love extra hands! And, don't forget- our first field trip is next Thursday, 9-27 to the Old Aurora Colony! If you can drive please email Mrs. Flores.

Ms. Mahn
