Over the past month, we have had many opportunities to practice our Opinion Writing. A few weeks ago, I challenged the students to extend their learning by designing a new seating chart and writing a persuasive letter, to convince me why I should choose theirs. I received several well thought-out letters. It's always interesting to see how children's minds work, and asking a 9 year old to explain why they should be allowed to sit by their friends, and even whom they selected to sit near, was very enlightening. Some students tried to put people together who they thought would like to get to know one another better. Several were concerned with pairings to minimize talking and "card flips". I enjoyed the variety immensely. It was a difficult choice to make, but based on the persuasive letters, one stood out above the rest. It is with great pleasure that I announce that Kyle wrote the winning letter, and his seating chart is now in place for Tuesday when we return! I am keeping the other letters, and may possibly try a few alternate arrangements in the weeks ahead.
Congratulations, and nice writing, Kyle!
