Colonial Tuesday!

Good day, my fellow colonists!
Today was a rousing colonial success! Fortunately, I am able to jump into my time machine at 3:30 in order to respond to emails, and post pictures of happy colonial children! Here are some highlights from our day!

  • This morning we learned how to weave. Each student has a small loom on which to work. Tomorrow we will work together on a larger loom to create a class masterpiece!
  • We learned how to play Nine Man Morris, which is a fun cross between tic-tac-toe and checkers. Each student made a gameboard to take home. We also discussed the fact that true colonists would most likely have drawn their gameboards in the dirt, and used found items, such as rocks, shells, or flowers, for pieces. 3rd grade colonists should be able to recreate the board and teach this game of logic at home!
  • This afternoon, we went out into the sunshine to play Graces. Graces requires two sticks (called wands- we used rhythm sticks) and 1 hoop, approximately 6-8" in diameter. We had a lot of fun learning the hoop-flinging and catching techniques required!

Tomorrow we will be baking Colonial bread and churning butter! Yum! We will also be hand-dipping candles and learning more games.

If you have a set of badminton racquets and shuttlecocks that you wouldn't mind lending for the day, we'll be using them on Thursday. Thank you!
